Moderator Paul Seletsky AIA
Presenter Carl Galioto FAIA, President, HOK
Presenter Christopher Sharples FAIA, Principal, SHoP Architects
Design Forum 2017 is an invitation-only round table event to discuss the future of the design profession. Participants include architects, engineers, clients, CMs, operators and technologists.
Architects are problem solvers. They analyze all given criteria in a multitude of design arenas and develop thematic solutions through discovery. Unlike utilitarian processing, architects advance a semantic art – disseminating ideas through light, materials, motion, assembly – and surprise.
For centuries, Architects held the purview to all governing aspects of building and design; valued for integrating engineering solutions with aesthetic ideas; bearing the risks of invention, from church domes to theatre sets; even owning the means and methods toward realizing their work.
In the last century, architects began relinquishing invention over fears of impending liability, devolving from being general practitioners into compartmentalized specialists, from conceptual innovators into bearers of a dysfunctional, adversarial compact.
In the Digital Age, Architects now have a tremendous opportunity to reinvent and re-engineer traditional and non-traditional spheres of influence, utilizing digital means and new models of partnership to dissolve ossified rules and foster new realms of service and value.
Design Forum 2017 will debate future digital design, construction and partnership stratagems by which architects forgo silos of operation and chart new strata of design valuation.
