Construction, preservation, maintenance, and revitalization of sustainable and resilient civil structures and infrastructure represent important challenges. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) can significantly contribute in addressing these challenges by delivering an in-time actionable information on structural health condition and performance. Advanced strain sensors based on Fiber-Optics (FO) and Large-Area Electronics (LAE) enable two novel SHM methods: global structural monitoring, based on long-gauge FO sensors, and integrity monitoring, based on distributed FO sensors and/or quasi-distributed LAE sensors. The aim of this presentation is to briefly introduce theory behind the FO and LAE technologies, present two novel methods enabled by these technologies, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods through real-life applications.
