Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design services for the Vessel, a Heatherwick Studio designed landmark sculpture that is the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards Public Square and Gardens in New York City. The Vessel is composed of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs, 80 landing, and 2,500 individual steps, rising from a 50 feet diameter base to a height and width of 150 feet.

CORE Studio assisted the building structures team in the creation of a semi-automated process to convert mesh and shell elements of the Vessel into structural analysis models. We developed an algorithm that created an analysis model where each element had data from the shell element and elements that were grouped based on our engineer’s specifications. This process allowed our team to quickly study and understand the performance of the many design iterations.
